Outdoor Enclosure - SmartThings multipurpose sensor V2
thingiverse
Outdoor gate sensors are difficult to find and expensive within the SmartThings ecosystem. Many individuals in the community attempt to waterproof the ST Multipurpose sensor by adding a protective layer. This enclosure is designed to be printed in a way that fully encapsulates the sensor portion of the device, making it weather-resistant. To test its durability, I submerged it in water for eight hours and found that it held up well. Here are the printing instructions: 1. Load the STL into your slicer (I used Cura). 2. Force the print to pause at layer 113 by going to extensions, post-processing, modifying G-code, choosing "Pause at height," changing the pause-at setting to "Layer No.," and setting the pause-layer to 113. 3. When the print pauses, slide the electronic portion of the sensor into the print with the flat side facing up (the sensor will serve as support for the cap). 4. Resume the print. 5. After completion, inspect the print for proper layer adhesion and ensure there are no cracks that could let moisture in. 6. When replacing batteries, simply crack open the shell, swap out the battery, and reprint a new case. I created this enclosure to meet my own needs and am sharing it because I believe others will find it useful. The box is designed to fit perfectly with the V2 sensor (the one with rounded corners in the pictures). I used PLA but other materials that are more weather-resistant could be employed instead. Some individuals may argue that a sealed box can degrade battery performance or prevent heat dissipation, reducing the life of your sensor. However, for my setup, which only cost $18 for the sensor, I have not observed any adverse effects; your mileage may vary. This sensor will be attached using adhesives, but I plan to add one with ears for screws and slots for zip ties in the near future.
