This is a model of an outboard motor gearbox. Below, I'll break it down in simple terms for someone who doesn't know how it works. The power from the crankshaft of the motor is transmitted to the gear on top through the driveshaft, which has a nut installed below it on the "pinion." The pinion then transmits this power to the two gears next to it, both of which are rotating in opposite directions (the pinion and gears are constantly spinning as long as the engine is powered). With a lever located either on the outboard motor or remote control, you move the clutch, positioned between the gears, into place by shifting it in the desired direction. As the gear clicks into place with the clutch due to its design shape, and since the clutch rides atop the propeller shaft, rotation begins, turning the propeller, which propels the boat forward. In order to switch to the opposite gear (forward or reverse), simply shift the clutch to the next available position. Neutral occurs when the clutch is placed squarely in the middle of its possible settings. All parts, including gears, pinion and clutch reside within the lower section of the motor housing where they are immersed in oil - essential for friction reduction and long-term performance. You can spot the shaft here: Outboard Propeller Shaft & find the propeller right over here: Outboard Propeller
