The crankshaft sends its force down to the main driveshaft running along the length of the motor's backbone. A compact gearbox nestled at the bottom of the driveshaft transmits the rotational energy from vertical spinning motion to horizontal spinning motion. The propeller, powered by a cluster of horizontally spinning gears, surges forward through the water. Both boats and airplanes employ the same basic propellers in air or water environments. However, on all but the tiniest airplane models, as well as on select boat designs, these propellers can "feather" their blades - that is, alter the angle of attack to optimize efficiency at various speeds. This capability mirrors a complex system much like multiple-speed transmissions in automobiles.
