A low stool is a common use of an ottoman, though sometimes it's just a piece of couch with no back, yet in other cases it has neither. Often made square or round, and generally stuffed full with cushions, ottonans often blend in well with chairs or gliders. You might see one being called a footrest, stool, coffee table, or used instead of a sofa. The furniture can also be part of the same suite as armchairs. Ottomans are a type of seating made without arms or backs but which generally acts like storage by being closed when sitting on it, the top flips open to let you store things. They have their roots in customs from long ago that showed an interest in furnishing practices that were in use back then. In other words, people used pillows stacked up high as seating arrangements for gatherings, usually at the bottom of buildings. Later down the line after getting into contact with people and customs from Europe from countries far, far away called Ottoman Empires during a very busy time 300 years ago or so the ottoman was eventually brought to them. Over the following few decades it came about they took their design ideas but modified things a bit such as giving a circle shape for an aesthetic reason then turned right around by altering its looks and taking away some other options from what had been added previously making room only one side in the center like putting the pillows together under all four.
