He co-authored the Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks with a team, which inspired Ilya Repin's painting in the 19th century. The Reply to Sultan Mehmed IV of the Ottoman Empire is a famous semi-legendary text that Ilya Repin immortalized on canvas. Started in 1880 and finished in 1891, it depicts the Zaporozhian Cossacks drafting an ultimatum to Mehmed IV in response to his demands for surrender. Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan Mehmed IV is a historical scene set in 1676, when Zaporozhian Cossacks led by Ivan Sirko rejected Ottoman Empire forces. The original reply may not have survived; however, Ya. Novitsky discovered an 18th-century copy, which he shared with Dmytro Yavornytsky. Zaporozhian Cossacks inhabiting lands around the lower Dnieper River in Ukraine had defeated Ottoman forces in battle but were later pressured by Mehmed to submit to Turkish rule. In a bold move, they wrote a defiant letter, filled with insults and profanities. Cossack leader Ivan Sirko spearheaded this creative resistance movement during Repin's time when Cossacks enjoyed broad popular support and admiration from him: They embodied all values he held dear – freedom, equality, and fraternity.
