Ostrea edulis (Upper Miocene, 9 million years ago). Villanueva de la Reina (Jaén) . Class Bivalvia, Superfamily Ostreacea, Family Ostreidae. The Ostrea edulis is a species of oyster, also known as the flat European oyster, which presents a sessile lifestyle fixed to the marine floor. Edulis means edible. The ostreids are relatively frequent in the province of Jaén in materials from the Lower Cretaceous of the Sierra del Pozo, and in materials from the Upper Miocene of the Guadalquivir Basin in localities such as Sabiote, Linares, Bailen and Villanueva de la Reina and in the Alcalá La Real Basin. This specimen is disarticulated and only preserves one valve. Unit of Natural Heritage of the Advanced Center for Earth Sciences (CEACTierra) of the University of Jaén.
