Osiris wooden statue

Used to hold scrolls like the "Book of the Dead," these wooden statues emerged in the 18th Dynasty but fell out of favor at the end of the New Empire. They were placed beside the deceased man in the burial chamber. This example from the National Museum is composed of two parts, joined together with wooden pins. A joint formed by a pin under the feet secured a status on a rectangular base. Covered with a black bituminous resin, symbolizing rebirth and fertility, it depicts the god Osiris in his traditional form, wearing an Atef crown whose side feathers are missing, with his hands clasped together at the shoulder or grasping a whip and staff. A hole under his chin indicates that he wore a divine beard. These resin-coated figures were part of the Theban clergy's funeral equipment during the 21st and 22nd dynasties.
