The intrepid OSIRIS-Rex spacecraft embarks on a seven-year odyssey to retrieve a sample from the asteroid Bennu. As it hurtles through space, excitement builds for the days ahead, making it imperative to print out this model to follow along as the mission dominates the headlines. This original design is crafted from scratch, carefully modeling the spacecraft to make it 3D-printable. Space probes are notoriously difficult to replicate due to their complex geometry, with multiple components jutting out at various angles. To overcome this challenge, I've adopted a rule-of-thumb: features should fit comfortably in one's hand. Achieving realistic proportions while ensuring printability has required some artistic license. Although not scaled precisely, the model accurately represents the prominent instruments on the spacecraft and makes for an impressive desktop display. I'm confident that you'll agree that this design strikes a harmonious balance between accuracy and feasibility. The model consists of six main pieces and various pegs to facilitate assembly. Below, I've included some tips on print orientation and assembly, as well as a two-piece stand for a visually appealing display. With minimal cleanup and a bit of hot-glue, you should be able to assemble a stunning desktop model. The peg-based design helps mitigate variability between 3D printers by only affecting the fit of the pegs in holes. If the fit is too loose, a small amount of hot glue will suffice; if it's too tight, simply sanding the pegs will improve the fit. OPTIONAL: As requested, I've separated the LEFT solar panel and the small sample return capsule (resembling a miniature antenna) to allow for printing in different colors.
