Orthostat with Syrians bearing tribute on their heads

In ancient Greek architecture, massive stone blocks called orthostates stood tall in walls, their height far exceeding their depth. These upright monoliths earned their name because they seemed to stand proudly upright rather than lying flat on their sides. Typically, pairs of orthostates formed a wall's thickness, one serving as the inner face and the other as the outer surface. Above each course of these towering blocks, a binding layer of stones was laid across the wall's width, joining its two faces together in a strong bond. A striking example can be seen in this image, depicting soldiers from different orders of the Assyrian Army marching in a stately procession.
