The Byzantine Empire was home to the Orthodox cross, a variation of the Christian cross, since the 6th century. This iconic symbol features three horizontal beams, with the bottom one angled. It is also known as the Russian cross, the Slavonic or Suppedaneum cross. The top beam typically holds the phrase 'INRI,' but sometimes displays 'The King of Glory' in line with Greek tradition. The lower beam acts as a footrest and is often slanted to represent St. Dismas, the penitent thief on Jesus' right side, who climbed upward. On Christ's left stands Gestas, the impenitent thief. Depictions frequently show the higher beam opposite where Christ's right hand falls, with a visible shift upwards towards Heaven.
