The intricate design on this terracotta plate draws inspiration from Cocteau's 'Young Orpheus' etching, which features a striking portrait of the mythical figure holding a lyre. The model for the etching was Jean Marais, Cocteau's close friend and lover, who was also a renowned French actor. Cocteau was a multifaceted artist - he was a poet, novelist, playwright, designer, and filmmaker - and he maintained friendships with influential figures like Pablo Picasso, Edith Piaf, Victor Hugo, Arno Breker, and many others from his time.
