Orpheus-Relief v.2
sketchfab
At the three-figure Orpheus relief, it's a cast of a Roman marble relief from the Roman imperial period. The type does not go back to a high-class original as long suspected. This particular relief stands out in that it is the only pictorial evidence of the tragic story of Orpheus and Eurydice. The relief shows the scene of their repeated separation, which has only been written about before. Because Orpheus didn't follow Hades' order not to look back while leaving the underworld, Hermes takes Eurydice back down into the underworld again. On the relief, Hermes is shown on the left side reaching out to take Eurydice's hand as she is being taken back into the underworld. Eurydice is facing Orpheus to her right and has placed her left hand on his shoulder - possibly a gesture of goodbye. Orpheus, who is leaning towards Eurydice, has removed her veil from her face.
