Designers crafted a 1-metre-long, one-thousandth-scale mock-up of an hypothetical interstellar vessel inspired by the Orion drive concept. Essentially, the ship self-detonates hydrogen bombs behind it and utilizes the resulting shockwave as propulsion. Engineers incorporated a substantial armoured plate coupled with specially dampened pistons at the rear to translate the short energy bursts into sustained acceleration. This design iteration prioritizes using two armour plates – one for accelerating and one for decelerating – thereby eliminating the need to perform mid-flight directional adjustments, a manoeuvre which would necessitate reversing direction entirely at significant fractions of the speed of light when facing intense frontal protection requirements from the interstellar medium.
