The Baltimore Orioles are a top-tier American professional baseball team based in Maryland's vibrant city of Baltimore, that competes at the highest level in Major League Baseball (MLB). As a key player in the East Division of the American League (AL), they hold one of eight founding franchises established by President Ban Johnson back in 1901. Initially, this particular franchise operated as the "Milwaukee Brewers" for its first year in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before relocating to St. Louis, Missouri to become the "St. Louis Browns". After a challenging 52-year stint in St. Louis, Baltimore business interests led by Clarence Miles stepped in to purchase the franchise in November 1953. The team officially moved to Baltimore for the 1954 season and proudly adopted the historic "Orioles" name as a tribute to Maryland's official state bird. The Orioles name had previously been used by several other major and minor league baseball clubs in Baltimore, including the franchise that would eventually become the renowned New York Yankees. Fans affectionately refer to their team as either the "O's" or the "Birds".
