Origami, German Bell, Math, Geometry

Origami or artistic paper folding is an engaging math-art activity that challenges minds with various ideas, including words, shapes, spatial thinking, symmetry, fractions, and proportionality. Most origami projects do not lend themselves to 3D design or printing, but some can be adapted for a more complex version. The German Bell is one of the few models I have attempted to redesign in 3D. It works well with PLA or flexible filament. Once the template is printed, remove it carefully with a spatula, then gently fold the square along all the grooves without folding them completely. When the creases are flexible, squeeze the four corners and allow them to come together slowly while pushing the bottom out slightly. This results in a German Bell that is an entry-level 3D design project suitable for those who have experience with traditional paper models. Thicker versions may work better depending on the filament used.
