Human: Besides crafting items that bring joy to the eye and hand, origami's underlying principles can also be applied to prototype innovative designs, develop practical tools, and tackle real-world challenges. This Oriceps design showcases a compliant mechanism inspired by Shafer's origami "Chomper", specifically designed for use as forceps that were later adapted and integrated into one of Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci robots. The gripping mechanism has potential applications in remote-controlled space tools, surgical instruments, household gadgets, and toys. The Oriceps can be 3D printed or laser cut. The choice of filament material will determine the fatigue and flexibility properties of the mechanism. Softer filaments will result in a more durable mechanism that withstands frequent use with minimal force required to activate it. Stiffer filaments, on the other hand, will require more force to activate but may become brittle and break after fewer uses.
