While the overall concept of orcs draws from various pre-existing mythologies, the main conception of these creatures originates from J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy writings, particularly in The Lord of the Rings. In Tolkien's works, orcs are depicted as brutish, aggressive, repulsive and malevolent beings that stand in stark contrast to the benevolent Elvish race (from which their own ancestors may have been corrupted and developed) and are generally forced into serving an evil power. Tolkien's concept of orcs has since been adapted and incorporated into other works of fantasy fiction as well as fantasy role-playing and strategy games (such as Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, and Warcraft), increasing the recognition of these creatures in popular culture.
