The Story of Oquna the Qajaq Hunter: Wearing his tuilik, Inuit water submersion gear, Oquna sets off from home to hunt in the sea by qajaq. His skills, honed from competition and practice on ropes, prepare him for the short Greenland summer and its challenges. The paddle quietly pulls his qajaq through the surf into the bay towards some icebergs where seals surely lie. A calm day makes it a good day for a hunt; he keeps in mind the rise and fall of tides as his prey is seen in the distance. Stealthily silent, Oquna begins to encroach on the seal with harpoon at the ready on his front deck. The seal within range, Oquna grasps his harpoon tightly, paddle prepared to brace for impact. He launches the harpoon through the air and strikes the target true. The avataq floats free, and his qajaq tilts sideways; Oquna braces himself to prevent capsizing as he fights the seal to exhaustion. After a fight lasting over an hour, Oquna emerges victorious, securing his family's meal. The journey of towing the seal home begins. Design: I created Oquna using Fusion 360. The qajaq, paddle, and harpoon were designed with sketches; tuilik body and avataq were sculpted within the software. A quick Google search for images of qajaqs provided inspiration, while qajaqusa.org offered valuable information once I decided to create a qajaq hunter. Print Settings: I printed Oquna using a Robo 3D PLA + ABS model with 30% infill for added durability. A raft was used to ensure stability during printing; supports were necessary to prevent warping. In Simplify 3D, custom supports were designed, producing a better support system without requiring any adjustments. The design's small size necessitated scaling it up by approximately 350%; the print took roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes. Post-Printing: After the print is complete, assembly is not required; simply remove the raft and/or supports (carefully around the paddle) and find a suitable spot for Oquna to reside.
