A simple filament runout sensor with a light barrier as a switch is utilized. The filament is loaded by simply pressing the pin, providing easy access to the loading process. Two springs are used to generate the necessary counter pressure, ensuring a secure connection. The light barrier module chosen for this setup is from ELEGOO, but various other options are available on the market. A ballpoint pen is repurposed as a source of springs, demonstrating creative resourcefulness in material selection. Dimensions of the light barrier module measure approximately 18mm by 15mm, offering a compact design that fits seamlessly into most setups. To ensure smooth operation, PTFE tubing pieces have been added to the openings of the presser and housing. The completed sensor module is connected to a Raspberry Pi, which runs on Octoprint for efficient monitoring and control. A wide range of ready-made filament plugins are available, allowing users to query any pins on the Raspberry Pi with ease. The plugin Filament Sensor Reloaded is being utilized in this setup, streamlining the process and enhancing functionality.
