Situated near Hviezdoslav Square in Bratislava, Slovakia, the Neo-Renaissance structure was constructed between 1885 and 1886 when Austria-Hungary reigned. Viennese architects Fellner & Helmer were responsible for its design; they also crafted theater buildings across ten European nations. The City Theater opened on September 22, 1886, with capacity for 1000 spectators and illuminated by 800 gas lamps. The auditorium featured a lustre adorned with 64 lights. Kornél Spányik, a local painter from Bratislava/Pressburg/Pozsony, and Munich artist Leo Lüttgendorf-Leinburg were among those who decorated the interior with frescos and paintings.
