Quickly generate a terrain or characters using height map information with OpenScad. Height maps are essentially grayscale images where pixel values represent 'z' coordinates for vertices in a mesh. Applying these 'z' values creates a mesh resembling a landscape. This technique can also be applied to font rendering, either by representing each pixel as a cube or using font outlines to draw polygons and linear_extrude(). The MeshRenderer.scad file includes two routines for this: shell_extrude_height_map() for single value maps and shell_extrude_color_map() for grayscale triplet maps. Adjustable resolution and solidity options offer control over size, rendering time, and output quality. Despite challenges in generating large groups of characters, the core height mapping technique remains versatile and powerful.
