The EMD SW 1500 is a powerful American diesel switcher locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division during the 1960s and 1970s. Approximately 800 were manufactured, and numerous units remain in service across the United States. This detailed 1:32 scale model of the EMD SW 1500 locomotive is part of "The OpenRailway Project," an open-source initiative aimed at providing free model trains to enthusiasts worldwide. As a seasoned 3D printing expert, I required a project with more intricate details to satisfy my creative needs. Given that my father and I had already constructed a garden railway (scale 1:32), building a train seemed like a logical next step. After consulting with a model train store in Stockholm over several cups of coffee, the EMD SW1500 emerged as the ideal choice. I began by researching specifications, drawings, and photographs to create an accurate design. Although I struggled to find suitable drawings, I relied on multiple photos to ensure a precise representation, albeit some details might be subject to error. Every component is 3D printed, except for the handrail, which is crafted from 1.5mm aluminum welding rod. While there are areas that require attention, this model can still be printed and assembled by anyone interested in owning their own 1:32 SW1500.
