The EMD SW 1500 locomotive was an American diesel switcher made by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in the 1960s and 1970s. Around 800 units were produced, with many still in service across the United States. This 1:32 scale model of the EMD SW 1500 is part of "The OpenRailway Project," an open-source initiative aiming to create more free model trains worldwide. After completing various 3D printing projects, I sought a new challenge requiring greater attention to detail. Given my father and I had already built a garden railway in the same scale, we decided to build a train. We visited a model train store in Stockholm and, after discussing options over several cups of coffee, settled on the EMD SW 1500. The design process began by researching specifications, drawings, and photos. Although I struggled to find detailed drawings, I managed to gather some information from various sources. Many details were missing, so I relied heavily on photographs, which may have introduced errors in my designs. Every component of this model is 3D printed, except for the handrail, which was crafted from a 1.5mm aluminum welding rod. Some aspects still require attention to detail, but with basic assembly skills, you can create your very own 1:32 scale EMD SW 1500 locomotive.
