OpenForge Cave Entrance
thingiverse
When I was approached by Danny from 3D Printed Tabletop to create a model for the Lost Adventures Kickstarter, I was thrilled to contribute to this innovative concept and have my model join forces with other talented modelers. I was even more excited when he shared his idea for a terrain piece for the free encounter, The Wilderness, which is a topic close to my heart. As you know, I'm passionate about creating models that are easy to use and versatile, and this project seemed like the perfect opportunity to push myself creatively. I present to you the Cave Entrance, a model that I had the privilege of working on with Danny. This cave entrance is designed to accommodate a large-sized miniature in its mouth, making it an ideal addition to any tabletop setting. It can be used as scatter for a fierce battle just outside the cave or as a clever ambush point for beasties lurking in the wilderness. I encourage you to check out the Lost Adventures Kickstarter, which features a wide range of amazing miniatures, scatter, and terrain pieces created by some of the best modelers in 3D printed gaming. This campaign is truly innovative and showcases the incredible talent of its contributors. As I worked on this project, I drew inspiration from my background in geology, which has been a lifelong passion of mine. In fact, geology was my minor throughout college, and I've always been fascinated by the natural world. The Cave Entrance model incorporates many geological features that are reminiscent of real-world rock formations. For example, the cave is carved into a rock face with alternating layers of softer limestone and harder conglomerate, which is a common phenomenon in nature. Additionally, nearly all natural caves and caverns are found in limestone, making it an essential component of this model. The steep angle of the layers suggests that this cave is located in an area of uplift, consistent with its placement in the foothills of a mountain range. Here's an image that I used as inspiration for this project. If you're new to OpenForge, I recommend checking out our tutorials for instructions on how to get started.
