Open Yag-E is an open-source Yag / LED laser cutter engraver that I created to transform my Neje style 1000mw engraver into something truly useful. This build log and collaboration platform showcases the project's progress, which is moving quickly despite still having a long way to go. My main goal for Open Yag-E is to cut foam board parts for RC planes with precision and accuracy. I've already conducted successful test cuts using this system, and now it's time to focus on designing the mechanical components. The frame of Open Yag-E is based on 2020 extrusions that serve as both the frame and linear rails, providing flexibility for various use cases. The linear rail slides are inspired by my 2020 tram design, available on Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3155269). I plan to power Open Yag-E using pancake-style NEMA 17 steppers in conjunction with GRBL for the Arduino Mega. Safety interlocks and air filtering will also be integrated into the system. As the project progresses, files for Fusion 360 (in inches, not millimeters) will be made available. I'm working on mounting plates for other laser heads, but I don't think Open Yag-E is solid enough to support a CO2 laser. A bill of materials with links will be included as the project advances. If you're interested in contributing to Open Yag-E, please join the group on Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/groups/open-yag-e). The controller board work can be found on GitHub at https://github.com/Nopetard/Open-Yag-E.
