The Open Toy project came to life in 2013 at Domaine de Boisbuchet after a workshop there. Samuel N. Bernier saw the potential for creating toys by turning discarded wood and cork scraps into cool accessories using his MakerBot printer on site. He crafted six game-changing accessories that turned these found materials into aircraft, choppers, birds and more. Bernier got the bright idea to swap the wood and cork out with edible material like fruits and veggies after spotting a beautiful garden at Domaine de Boisbuchet about a week later. It was also super easy to puncture those veggies without needing any tools, unlike hard-to-work-with wood. This innovative project stalled for nearly ten months until Thomas Thibault stepped in as Bernier's design intern. With his creative talents on full display, he made brand-new parts for the collection - a submarine and a rocket were born that way! Open Toys were officially showcased in Paris at Autodesk Pop-Up gallery in October 2014. At the event, kids couldn't get enough of transforming potatoes, carrots, eggplants and cucumbers into some awesome vehicles - cars, space ships and sea vessels! Mr. Potato from digital fabrication times was finally on the scene. The team over at le FabShop dropped their "Impression 3D Pas à Pas" guide in hopes it would help spread Open Toys excitement far and wide. They decided to put the project files out for free on popular platforms - Thingiverse, YouMagine, Cults 3D and Instructables, just waiting to see what other cool stuff their community came up with. The crew is ready for users to start adding new models, hoping it would boost this amazing collection even further.
