This is a crucial part of a system of prints that transforms an OpenBeam into a versatile optical rail. An optical rail is a long, straight, and sturdy rail onto which various optical components such as light sources and lenses can be securely bolted down and easily moved along the length of the rail. Commercial optical rails are typically sold for $380 per meter ($115 per foot), while high-quality OpenBeam materials cost only $12 per meter for their durable black anodized finish. This innovative system is part of the open-source optics project, a pioneering effort led by Michigan Tech's Open Sustainability Technology Research Group to dramatically reduce the cost of essential scientific optical hardware.
