This bike pedal design that can be printed from polylactic acid (PLA) for less than commercial bike pedals - while weighing significantly less - passes the CEN racing standard, meeting all requirements for performance and safety. The full test results are available at Tanikella et al.'s study published in the Journal of Humanitarian Engineering: "Viability of Distributed Manufacturing of Bicycle Components with 3-D Printing: CEN Standardized Polylactic Acid Pedal Testing." The source code for the pedal design is available on Youmagine: https://www.youmagine.com/designs/bike-pedal-56-5. The pedal was 3-D printed using a commercial RepRap and rigorously tested according to CEN standards for racing bicycles, including static strength, impact, and dynamic durability. These tests revealed that the pedals meet all requirements of the CEN standards, making them suitable for use on bicycles. The 3-D printed pedals are significantly lighter than the stock pedals used on the Black Mamba, resulting in a noticeable performance enhancement while reducing production costs if raw PLA or recycled materials are used. This reduction in cost can be particularly beneficial for individuals living in extreme poverty, as it makes high-quality bicycle components more accessible to those who need them most. The original design of the pedal was created by Nagendra Tanikella using FreeCAD, a powerful and versatile computer-aided design (CAD) tool that is widely used in the maker community.
