Open, Sesame!
thingiverse
I wanted to expand my Home Automation possibilities by incorporating two new controls:

Functionality to open the door with a simple voice command: 'Ok Google, Open Door Now!'

Feature to switch computer on/off in soft mode, allowing for proper shutdown, by saying 'Ok Google, Initialize Computer Process!'

I achieved my goal by utilizing compatible Smart Switches with Google Home and Alexa, then programming a Routine that sequences the switches on and off. The challenge was adapting these switches to control low-voltage buttons on existing devices rather than AC line power plugs. To solve this issue, I added a relay to decouple from the AC Line, allowing it to close thin wires connected in parallel to the buttons to be controlled. In one case, the wires connect to the Intercom button that controls the front door's opening mechanism; in the other case, they connect to the button on top of the PC desktop case, which initiates the computer's shutdown sequence. The thin wires are soldered in parallel to the button being controlled. The 3D Designs provided offer a convenient enclosure for the 'Open Door Now!' components: Smart Switch + Relay. To complete this setup, you'll need to define Google Home or Alexa routines that emulate a temporary push of the button by closing the switch for a short period and then opening it back. You can also add additional actions to your routines, such as broadcasting a message throughout the house when the door is opened from outside.
