Open DSKY - bflores Modified
I placed an order for the electronics from S&T GeoTronics LLC (https://opendsky.com/) through this link: https://opendsky.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders The total cost was $530, including a $30 shipping fee for the "Open DSKY Complete Kit". A huge thank you to Marc Tessier and S&T GeoTronics for their excellent communication and for creating this amazing replica. They are very responsive and helpful. The electronics are truly amazing. The build process was extremely simple and easy to follow. More details are below. This post includes my contributions to the OPEN DSKY project. Additional notes can be found below.
(COMMENTS AND NOTES)
- The quality of the DSKY electronics is outstanding, and everything works perfectly as intended. - Unfortunately, the 3D prints provided were of extremely poor quality and were unusable in my opinion. I suspect they may have been printed on a cheap Chinese-made printer at a fast draft rate. The included 3D prints are really subpar. Please see photos. - The buttons used are very disappointing and only respond half the time. They need to be replaced with better ones. I had planned to use this as a demo project at Space Center Houston for the Apollo 50th Anniversary, but the buttons may ruin the whole project. - While not true to scale, the keys and windows on my replica are close enough in size. - I had to modify and recreate some of the .STL files, which I designed using Fusion 360. The prints were made on a Prusa i3 MK3. - They requested that you cut the solder leads flush with the PCB so the top cover can fit perfectly over it. However, I redesigned the .STL file to allow for a more straightforward build process. - Some of the stencil masking on the PCB was missing or lacked labels for certain VIAs, but it was easy to figure out where each component went. - Unfortunately, they did not include enough M3 10MM socket head screws to complete the back panel. I had to order additional screws online. - They also didn't provide sufficient pin headers, so I had to purchase more online as well. - The custom 3-segment plus minus +/- LEDs are incredibly dim and hard to see. In contrast, the other segment LEDs next to them are much brighter. I'm not a fan of these custom LEDs and think they need to be made brighter. Please refer to my video or images for further details. - I replaced the original top cover with one made from Matterhackers Black 1.75mm PLA (https://www.matterhackers.com/store/l/175mm-pla-filament-black-1-kg/sk/MY6CYEZM). - To complete this project, I had to order additional materials online, which can be found below.
(MATERIALS I HAD TO ORDER TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT)
- Matterhackers Black 1.75mm PLA (https://www.matterhackers.com/store/l/175mm-pla-filament-black-1-kg/sk/MY6CYEZM) - FilaCube Engineering Grey 1.75mm PLA (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F21M533/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00) - Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Commemorative Medallion (https://www.shopnasa.com/collections/coins-and-medallions/products/apollo-11-medallion) - M3 Screws (https://www.ebay.com/itm/M3-Socket-Screw-Allen-Head-Cap-Self-Tapping-Screws-304-Stainless-Steel/332769891257) - Pin Headers (https://www.ebay.com/itm/80-Pcs-40Pin-2-54mm-Single-Row-Straight-Female-Pin-Header-Strip-PCB-Ardunio/232523629470) - Avery Matte Frosted Clear Labels (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006HUP7/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00) - Tracing Paper (https://www.amazon.com/Strathmore-370-9-Tracing-Bound-Sheets/dp/B0027AAIB2)
(MY VIDEO DEMO OF THE DSKY)
You can find my video demo of the Open DSKY Replica at https://youtu.be/LitNipPXTwo.
(SUMMARY)
I'm very glad I purchased this kit. It's truly a work of art that requires some tweaking to reach its full potential. I'm eagerly looking forward to version 2.0! For now, go ahead and purchase one of these kits from S&T GeoTronics - it's a fun project, and I'd love to see any improvements or changes you make to the design.
