Open Book

This is a simple model of a fully open, hardcover book, ideal for use as a miniature. I designed it specifically for use in a custom snow globe, where it leans mostly vertical. As such, the book remains open at less than 180 degrees to give it more character and visual interest. In other words, when laid flat on its spine, the covers are angled up slightly. Printing the book standing up with supports is recommended to help print the pages properly. Printing the book flat creates an extreme overhang caused by the angled covers. I did not use a raft for my print (book scaled to ~1.5" high) and it turned out great. I created this model by first designing the profile of the book in Inkscape using a picture of an open book as a reference. The complex curve that the pages make was essential to capture, so I took a close-up picture of an open book, placed it in the background of Inkscape and then carefully traced it. Exporting this design as SVG allowed for precise control over the curves. The SVG was then imported into Blender where it was extruded into the final shape of the fully open, hardcover book model.
