South of Rotterdam's bustling port lies a serene lake that was once the primary river outlet of the Brielse Maas, serving as the main shipping route to the port of Rotterdam from the 13th until the 18th century. In 2014, the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency conducted an exhaustive archaeological assessment of the OVM 8, a massive Dutch trading vessel from the second half of the 17th century. This historic wreck has undergone extensive excavation since the 1980s and now lies in a state of severe degradation due to the invasive Teredo navalis. The striking contrast in color and image quality across various parts of the wreck is a direct result of experimentation with different imaging techniques for 3D modeling purposes. Thomas Van Damme, a renowned expert in digital reconstruction, skillfully processed the data captured by these innovative methods, showcased on his social media profile @Ubi3D.
