South of Rotterdam's bustling port lies a tranquil lake that once served as the river outlet for the Brielse Maas, a vital shipping lane to the city's port from the 13th to the 18th century. In 2014, the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency, known as RCE, conducted an in-depth archaeological assessment of OVM 14. The site had already been ravaged by sand extraction in the 1960s, which saw the removal of the stern and stem, leaving it severely damaged. Unfortunately, a sport diver later made things worse by illegally excavating the entire wreck. Despite these disturbances, researchers were still able to uncover remnants of an English seafaring vessel from the mid-17th century that likely transported coal. This marked the first-ever trial with 3D photogrammetry, which explains the limited coverage of the wreck and the resulting minimal presentation of the 3D model. Thomas Van Damme (@Ubi3D) expertly processed the data for this groundbreaking project.
