Onitama is a two-player, perfect information abstract game with a random starting set-up that's always up for grabs. On a 5x5 board, both players start strong with five pawns on their side, with the main pawn holding down the middle ground. Each player has two open cards that show off possible moves for any of his pieces, each one a tantalizing option. There's also a fifth card that neither player can use, creating an interesting dynamic. On a player's turn, he makes a bold move by choosing one of his cards and using it to make one of his pieces jump into action, then swaps out the used card for the mysterious fifth card. The other player follows suit, making a move according to their chosen card and replacing that card with the same enigmatic fifth card - which just happens to be the card the first player used. When a piece lands on an opponent's pawn, that pawn is removed from the game for good. Taking the opponent's main pawn or moving your own main pawn into your opponent's starting space secures you a thrilling victory.
