2nd Update 09DEC18*

Spacer might leave a bit too much space, so I made a thinner one - it's about as thin as I can get it and still be useful. Again, dealer's choice for use.

Update 09DEC18*

Getting the trimmer line back onto the spool was a bit of work, so I made a spacer for the winding of the filament - it might be a little too much space, but I figure once the zip ties are cut, it should fill out nicely. Again, dealer's choice if you want to use it.

I wanted to have a spool like a Master spool like this one https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2869973 that I could spool nylon trimmer line onto, zip tie it, and take it off the spool and be able to fit just the filament into my dehydrator.

I didn't find anything that was thin enough - so I fired up Fusion360 and designed one.

I'm not cutting it up my dehydrator yet :) - I love my jerky too much!

I managed to get 366 grams of trimmer line onto it, so that's why I called it a 1/3rd spool :)

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Anet

Printer:

A8

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

.32 mm or less

Infill:

30%

Notes:

I printed this in PETG, .32 mm layer height with 30% infill to reduce print time (for me about 2 hrs for the male piece, and 2.5 hrs for the female piece. Dealers choice on settings, but I wouldn't go any higher than .32 mm

I had some slight issues with threads at that resolution, but I was able to clean it up and the pieces thread together just fine. Printing at a .2 or finer may prevent thread issues - again dealers choice.

I'm using Maxpower 333665 Residential grade round .065 inch trimmer line on a 1,800 foot spool. link http://a.co/d/fOin0jW

I figured that if I wanted to do this, someone else might be able to use this design as well.

Getting the trimmer line back on the spool is going to be tricky - I must have wound it to tight. However, I think this should work out just fine.

How I Designed This

Fusion 360

Trail and error -V20 in design, and printed about 3-4 prototypes. I like the last one enough to call it good.

Category: 3D Printing
