One Piece Spool Holder - Prusa I3 MK2 / MK3 Edition
thingiverse
The stock spool holder for the Original Prusa I3 MK2 is a poor design that consistently lets me down. After a spool fell off during a print, hit the bed, snapped a zip tie, and caused the heat bed to wildly flail about until it wore itself out, I knew it was time to come up with something better. I decided to create a simple one-piece spool holder printed in a single shot. Since spool holders don't need bearings, the spool glides smoothly on the printed plastic. Moreover, you want some static friction or your spool will unwind and tangle badly. I designed this spool holder to fit all of my spools of filament from small spindles to large ones, including both wide and narrow types, and it should fit 98% of 1K to 1.5K spools out there. Simple one-handed loading allows me to use the other hand to hold onto the loose end of the filament. Updated on April 28th, 2017 - I modified the retaining groove to provide more clearance for the bearings on the print head, which helps prevent collisions when printing above objects taller than 200mm. This spool holder is based on my One Piece Spool Holder (see http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2036761), made to be compatible with the original Prusa I3 MK2.
