One-Piece Printed Glider

One-Piece Printed Glider

Glider with a futuristic outline, printed in one step. Instructions Print with 100% fill. Use PLA material at 0.2mm first layer, and 0.1mm layers for the rest. You will likely need to bend up the tail to get it trimmed and bend up the wings for some dihedral, which provides roll stability - check out the photos to see what this means, and aim for symmetry! It's quite hard to throw; hold the fuselage forward of the wing root when you toss it - avoid twisting while throwing! Two versions of the STL file are available: one with a 0.4mm thick fin, and another with a 0.8mm thickness. See edit 2 for details. If your slicer program has issues with the single-pass fin at 0.4mm, try 0.8 or re-generate the STL from the scad file with the desired thickness. The entire model is formed from extruded DXFs in OpenSCAD. You can modify these using Inkscape if you prefer - SVG sources are provided, but keep in mind that OpenSCAD won't work with curved paths in DXFs. Convert them to lines by using 'Extensions > Modify Path > Flatten Beziers' first, then re-export to DXF. The fin is a single-wall part that has had issues when printed on certain RepRaps due to the print fan blowing off layers - it doesn't appear to be a problem for all printers (fine on my mini kossel and one of the prints here) but I'll look into making a better version. A missing DXF file was added in edit 1. Edit 2: The fin is causing problems on some printers/slicers, so I've uploaded new STL files with 0.4mm and 0.8mm fin thicknesses to see if that helps. I've also made it easier to change the fin thickness by editing the .scad file. Edit 3: I've changed the *.scad file to use layers from the DXF file (which was there all along but I didn't realize OpenScad could utilize them), and included the SVG source as suggested. Additionally, I rounded out the back of the nose for added strength after receiving reports that it would break on heavy landings - thanks for the input!
