One handed fishing reel
thingiverse
WORK IN PROGRESS - NOT YET COMPLETE... and the parts require "fit and finish" tweaks. My nephew can't use a regular fishing reel because he's missing a thumb. This design lets him cast and reel with one hand instead. The reel attaches to any front half of a fishing pole. It's an adaptation of elements from PowerPac by Deepsiks, PowerPac Extras by Caramellcube, and A Better Slip Coupler by CodonExe. RAFT Clutch: Printed at 0.08mm resolution with a 20% infill. BRIM Rest of the parts: The rest used 0.1mm resolution and 10% infill BRIM How I Designed This: The system consists of internal electronics (motor, battery, charge circuit, switch, charge indicator) taken from a 4.8V screwdriver. Pressing forward on the switch activates the printed solenoid and releases the reel for casting. Taking your finger off the switch turns off the magnetic field and the spring engages the spool into the worm gear. Pressing reverse spins the reel to pull in the line. With an approximate 29:1 ratio on the worm gear, this is plenty of power and speed. The clutch keeps the reel from getting too tight; I plan to make it adjustable in later posts. A custom solenoid nests into the worm gear housing, which allows for a smaller size suitable for children. Commercial solenoids could work but would make the reel too large. I'm experimenting with 200-250 windings on the solenoid to achieve the gauss rating needed to move the reel without generating heat. The electronics are sealed in with CA (superglue) or heat welded together with an old soldering iron to prevent moisture damage. I'm still working on the handle layout due to my nephew's grip strength, but I'll post it once complete with integrated electronics.
