Omid burst onto the scene as Iran's trailblazing domestically built satellite. Named for its uplifting Persian title ?????, meaning "Hope", this state-of-the-art data-processing satellite is designed for cutting-edge research and telecommunications. Iran's official word is that Omid touched down successfully in space on 2 February 2009 after blasting off aboard the rugged Safir 2 carrier rocket, catapulting itself into a stable low Earth orbit.
