Olympus TG Cover for Caving
thingiverse
This is a custom-made lens cover designed specifically for the Olympus TG series of cameras, including my own TG-5 model. It's likely compatible with earlier versions of the series as well. The cover has been engineered with caving enthusiasts in mind, taking into account the unique challenges of capturing images in cave environments. In its closed position, it shields the camera lens from dirt and debris that can accumulate inside caves. When opened, the cover protects the camera's image area from the flash, which is essential when using a camera in a cave setting where moisture and back splatter are common issues. However, I often use the inbuilt flash to trigger remote flashes, so the cover folds up to safeguard the flash while still allowing sufficient light to escape through the sides. I realize that non-cavers might appreciate this design's aesthetic appeal and want to create their own version with the cover folding away from the flash. If you're interested, please send me a message, and I'll provide an alternative base design for you. The hinge of the lens cover utilizes a piece of 1.75mm filament as a pivot pin. Supports are necessary, but they can be tricky to remove from the base due to the Olympus bezel design, which I couldn't avoid in this project. ***UPDATE*** I've added a new "Universal" version that allows for three different placement options on the camera, enabling you to choose whether to cover the flash or not. This updated design features slightly thicker walls for added robustness, but it requires smaller tabs, resulting in some rotational play once clipped into place. However, this is not detrimental to the overall performance of the lens cover.
