
Olympia Typewriter Tab Brake - Replacement Segment

This is a replacement tab brake segment for an Olympia typewriter. The tab brake in these typewriters is a small cylinder that holds four of these segments, and the slots of each are outfitted with bits of cork (cut up a wine cork). When you hit the Tab button this mechanism is engaged and slows the speed of the carriage a bit, preventing it from slamming into the tab stops quite as hard. The segments were manufactured with cheap pot metal, and after all of these decades they tend to disintegrate. Here's a replacement. Worked in my Olympia, it may work in yours. Note that if you only have one or two segments that have disintegrated you can just remove those and the brake will work just fine. But if you need to replace some of the segments, here you go -
