This richly colored metope once adorned the east porch of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (circa 460 BCE); its remains reside in the Olympia Archaeological Museum and the Louvre. It forms part of a series illustrating the twelve labors of Heracles. The original metope was carved in high relief; the color scheme is grounded in research and aesthetic consideration. "The subject of the ninth metope...is the theft of Geryon's cattle....The Olympia depiction stands out for its omission of the cattle, which serve as the ultimate objective of Herakles' endeavor, as well as the shepherd and two-headed dog that guard them and must be vanquished in order to capture them. Only Geryon and Herakles are portrayed....Although the remains are fragmentary, it is evident that two of the three bodies of Geryon have already fallen prey to Herakles' brute force and the third is taking a pounding."
