This vibrant artwork once adorned the eastern façade of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia (circa 460 BCE); the remnants are now preserved within the Olympia Archaeological Museum's collection. It forms part of a series of twelve pieces depicting Heracles' arduous undertakings. The original piece was crafted with meticulous attention to detail, elevated by an intentional color palette that is both research-driven and aesthetically pleasing. "The final installment...portrays Heracles as he meticulously cleans the Augean stables, overflowing with filth....[T]his Labor stands out in almost every way. It eschews the conventional depiction of monstrous adversaries and perilous situations. Instead, it centers around a monetary transaction between Heracles and King Augeas, with Eurystheus nowhere to be seen. Moreover, Heracles is left without any tangible evidence to commemorate his feat....The local context must account for its inclusion...and particularly for its placement at the conclusion of this narrative cycle."
