Olympia, Metope 10: Atlas (2.5D)
sketchfab
This vibrant metope once adorned the east porch of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia around 460 BCE; its remains can be found in the Olympia Archaeological Museum. It is one part of a series illustrating the twelve labors of Heracles. The original metope was carved in high relief, and its color scheme was developed through research and aesthetic judgment. In this labor, Heracles had to retrieve the golden apples of immortality from a serene garden situated near the Atlas Mountains. The garden was meticulously tended by evening nymphs who derived great pleasure from singing. "The metope...is composed of strong vertical elements: Athena on the left, Heracles in the middle temporarily supporting the Heavens and Atlas, who has just returned from collecting the apples, on the right."
