The colossal Olmec heads are 17 massive stone depictions of human faces carved from huge basalt rocks. These monumental sculptures date back at least to before 900 BC and are a defining characteristic of ancient Mesoamerica's Olmec civilization. Each head represents an adult man with plump cheeks, flat noses, and slightly crossed eyes; their physical traits match those found among modern-day inhabitants of Tabasco and Veracruz. The backs of these massive monuments often feature flat surfaces. The boulders used to create the heads were transported from the Sierra de los Tuxtlas mountains in Veracruz, a feat that required enormous human effort and resources given the sheer size of the stones. It's believed that the elaborate headdresses on each head represent powerful Olmec rulers. Each known example has its own unique headdress, but how they were transported to major Olmec centers remains unclear.
