Olive Jar Rim #93-1394. Spanish colonial era ships commonly transported amphora-like earthenware jugs known as "olive jars" (botijas in Spanish) to store wine, oil, and vinegar. These egg-shaped containers measured approximately 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 cm in diameter. The St. Johns Wreck, believed to be the 1564 galleon Santa Clara's final resting place, carried at least 130 olive jars. Most of these jars shattered upon impact when the ship sank, but we determined their total number by counting the surviving rims. This olive jar rim measures an outside diameter of 9.4 cm and stands 4.0 cm tall above its shoulder.
