The Oldsmobile Toronado was a personal luxury car produced by General Motors' Oldsmobile division from 1966 to 1992 over four distinct generations. This iconic vehicle made waves with its innovative transaxle version of GM's Turbo-Hydramatic transmission, marking the first time a U.S.-built front-wheel drive automobile had hit the market since the Cord's demise in 1937. Built on the same E platform as the rear-wheel drive Buick Riviera and the front-wheel drive 1967 Cadillac Eldorado, these three models shared a common foundation for most of the Toronado's impressive 26-year run. The name "Toronado" didn't hold any prior significance, having been originally chosen for a 1963 Chevrolet show car. At its debut, the Toronado boasted several groundbreaking GM innovations, including: A heavy-duty Turbo-Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission (designated THM425 in FWD form) The Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor Spherical exhaust-manifold flange gaskets that allowed for greater freedom of movement and leak prevention in the exhaust system A draft-free ventilation system, which dramatically reduced wind noise by eliminating conventional front-door triangular window vents.
