The Shell name originated from seashells that Marcus Samuel senior imported from the Far East during the late 19th Century. His sons, Marcus junior and Samuel, chose Shell when they needed a name for kerosene being exported to Asia. As kerosene sales took over the business's turnover, the company adopted the name for its new import-export organization set up in 1897 - the Shell Transport and Trading Company. The Shell name temporarily took a backseat in 1907 when the company merged with Royal Dutch to form the Royal Dutch Shell Group. However, the newly formed business was quickly known as Shell for short.
