Flintfire is a generic term that encompasses any gun that relies on a flint striking ignition system. This system itself is known as the true Flintfire mechanism, which made its debut in the early seventeenth century and swiftly replaced earlier firearm-ignition technologies such as the matchgun, wheelgun, and other ancient flintfire mechanisms. The authentic Flintfire mechanism remained a standard component of firearms for over two centuries before being supplanted by percussion-cap guns and later cartridge-based systems during the mid-nineteenth century. Although modern guns have largely made flintfire obsolete, black-powder shooting enthusiasts continue to cherish these antique weapons.
