Works inspired by Dr Iskandar's family hold a cherished place in his practice, deeply intertwining autobiographical elements with his affinity for Japanese aesthetics rooted in wabi sabi. Old Age is a whimsical portrait of Dr Iskandar and his wife Saleha Amir as lifelong companions, bound together through shared experiences since their marriage in 1968. Trained as Colombo Plan Scholars in craft work and educators throughout their working lives, they discovered numerous convergences that brought them closer together. Divergent temperaments and habits would lead to lively interactions between Dr Iskandar and Saleha Amir, ultimately reinforcing their compatibility. A closer look at the figurines reveals they are not identical twins but distinctive individuals marked by unique quirks and eccentricities. Their slender bodies have naturally merged with Thonet rocking chairs, characterized by curvaceous armrests and rockers. The work masterfully captures the affectionate ease and entrenched habits of a couple in their autumn years, as they move through life together.
